Attention: Junior Slalom Paddlers and Supporters

Many of you have heard news that the New River Academy will operate a spring high school semester dedicated to slalom paddlers. Please allow me to tell you more.

As the director of Huge Experiences and the New River Academy I have always wanted to offer our accredited college prepatory school advantages to slalom junior athletes. We actually ran a successful program during the spring of 2005 to Australia’s Penrith Whitewater Stadium with then high school students Ricky Powell, Casey Eichfeld, Ashley Nee, Isaac Levinson, and Jeff Gette. Martin Nevaril, slalom coach for Valley Mill (http://valleymill.com/), coached this group at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium.

Martin’s coaching, the facilities, and the students were fabulous. The problem I saw with this program was that it was combined with our freestyle kayak program. This ultimately compromised the training of both programs. But also offered advantages.

A Leader’s Approach

Shaun Smith approached me this March with a request to lead a slalom semester. I had worked with Shaun leading international trips, observed the teen program he helped build in Chattanooga, and knew he was the leader for this program.

More about College Placement through New River Academy

We employ private school teachers to travel with the students and offer everything from Algebra I to advanced placement English and Composition for college credit.

The really cool thing is that our teachers are also young, energetic, and love to paddle. Thus, New River Academy provides excellent jobs to well-fit educators who are as passionate as you about slalom kayaking.

Top Concerns Slalom Families/Supporters Are Asking:

  1. How much is the tuition?
$13,400 includes, travel, lodging, and food expenses. Students are required to pay whitewater park fees. This tuition is reduced from our normal tuition rate of $14,800. Why? Because we want to encourage this new program. Please visit “Explanation of Costs.”

  2. Who will coach?
We will employ short-term instructors at each destination while maintaining a core group of semester instructors. Many coaches have tentatively expressed interest in supporting this unique education with their instruction. You can expect to train beside 2008 Olympic hopefuls during this vital training period.

  4. "But I attend a specific training program.”
The New River Academy is a high school offering you both training and education. It is our goal to promote your kayak training programs via your accomplishments and our website, www.kayakschool.org. Kayakschool.org is being structured with the goal of promoting the nations best kayak programs. Students enrolled within photography and videography multimedia courses will learn how to report journalist quality publications. Families and supporters enjoy seeing the reports either made by or including their student. Let us offer you an education, place you at a competitive advantage, and promote your local kayak organization.

  5. “I know someone who would be an excellent teacher or coach.”
Then place them into contact with me ASAP. We are looking for instructors who are role models, have positive teaching experiences, and are able to contribute to a team environment. See our “Employment Opportunities” document.
