Video 101: Parent Interviews
By Tino Specht

A short instructional on how to make an easy to watch interview.
1. Decide who your subject will be and approach them about getting an interview with them.
2. Once this is established it is good to give the subject the questions before you start filming so that they are not put on the spot. This will give them time to think about their answers before prime time. Note: sometimes it is good to give them direction if there is something specific you need conveyed.
3. Set your camera up on a tripod with their head and shoulders to the left or right of the frame. Note: This is just fallowing the rule of thirds.
4. Once your camera is turned on you should plug headphones into the audio outlet so you can hear the how the audio would sound through a TV. This way you can pick up any discrepancies in the audio and redo if necessary.
5. Hit the record button and ask the question. Let them answer for as long as they want . If you want a shorter interview, don’t be afraid to ask them to sum up what they said in a shorter amount of time.
6. Take it back to the editing station and cut it down to the parts that you want.
7. Put it online for people to watch!

In this Video class project students interviewed New River Academy while during the China Parent trip.
