Welcome New Students:
We hope you are excited! Your first year will be an adventure whether you are a ninth grader or upper classmen. In preparation for the start of the school year,
we have put some helpful information together for you in this section.
Much of this information focuses on boarding school life, including dormitory information, dress code guidelines, and advisers. Also included are details on a number of subjects from inbound and preseason to summer reading and course selection. Information regarding computers. telephones and other technology can also be found here.
What if you could invent the perfect high school? What would it be like?
First, you’d want to make kayaking a top priority. At least 2 hours of kayaking a day. Maybe 3 or 4 hours. Better yet 2 to 3 hours of kayaking twice a day. Next you might want the school to be on an extended field trip to all the great rivers in the world. And so there wouldn’t be any conflicts between school and sports how about if all the teachers are also passionate kayakers too.
While we’re at it we could eliminate homework and tests and have class only 2 hours a day and only in your favorite subjects. Way? No way!
Get real. The only way your parents would let you go to a kayak high school is if the academics were as strong or stronger than the best college prep school. That hurts.
But if we keep the classes small and the teacher to student ratio low say at most 3 students per teacher then classes could be more personalized. More like having a private tutor
than getting lost in a big class of 15 to 20 students. You’d have to work hard but the sacrifice would be worth it. Think of all that paddling.
Next we could bring in the best pro kayakers to be coaches. And since the school is mobile it could travel to all the important competitions. Wishful thinking?
We’ve just described Huge Experiences New River Academy. A fully accredited college preparatory school based in West Virginia but traveling the world.
